It's been a year since Google's initial proposal to reduce certificate validity from 398 days to 90 days. Change is imminent, and time is of the essence. Are you ready for this major shift?
In March 2023, Google Chromium proposed its interest in reducing certificate validity by over 75% to just 90 days. It believes that this move will encourage "automation and the adoption of practices that will drive the ecosystem away from baroque, time-consuming, and error-prone issuance processes."
The shift to a 90-day certificate validity will be monumental. Shorter validity guarantees frequent security updates, but it also means operational overhead and a higher risk of human error. If your organization relies on manual certificate management or employs a solution that's devoid of automation capabilities, it's time to act.
It might be best to act while the proposal is still under review. Do you have to start from scratch? Do you have to audit your current practices to formulate an action plan? Do your employees need training and to be aware of the upcoming mandate? Regardless of where you are in this journey, the time to act is now.
